Another Grand Canal view. Those flat boats with all the windows to the right are the vaporetti (vaporetto is singular). These are the water buses of Venice, and the ones that go up and down the Grand Canal make for a perfectly fine tour, albeit without commentary. But Venice is for looking at, anyway.
The Redentore Church. Did not go there but it's kind of pretty just to look at, like so much of Venice, at least along the Grand Canal. We stayed on the Lido, the island furthest out, so our vaporetto ride was 35-40 minutes minimum, depending on the time of day and crowdedness. It's a great way to get a leisurely look at much of the Grand Canal over the course of several days, with differing weather and sunlight conditions. I'd suggest staying on the Lido unless you're really rushed. Also, the hotels are probably a bit cheaper, at least if it's not peak summertime, because the Lido has its own beaches, so is more crowded when it's sun-bathing time.
A neighborhood square in Venice--sunny, few tourists.
View of the city from the wider lagoon, closer to the Lido.
