6 Oct.08: Latest thoughts

Having been without power for 12 days and this financial stuff going on has made me wonder not just what is important in life but what is truly essential. If what we really NEED is shelter, food, and clothing , why is our life so complicated? Should it be? Are the really effective humans those who still live simply, in tribal groups, with only the simplest technology--spears, etc.? If civilization implodes from our greed, bloated consumerism, and ecological irresponsibility, will those tribes carry on human life? Which group is more 'primitive?' Is our sophistication just arrogance and stupidity? It may be technologically advanced in some ways, our life, but how precarious is it all? And how much is it built on the backs of poor people, and how much has civilization (urbanization, really) been built from incessant wars, brutality, and violence, and the economic enslavement of one group over another, starting with male enslavement of women.
And if you think enslavement is too strong a word, research global trafficking, think about pimps' control of prostitutes, read about bride-burning in India, clitoridectomies in Africa, stoning of women, Austrian fathers keeping their daughters as sex slaves, or polygamists marrying 14-year-olds right here in the USA. And don't forget religious institutions which insist that the life-bearers, women, mothers, are not fit for leadership. This in the 21st century. Things to think about, y'all. Minerva4owl.
