29 Oct. 08--Rome sights

This was a sunset at Ostia, on the coast west of Rome. Ostia Antica was the Romans' port, but it's now inland, having silted up, as has Pisa. So modern Ostia is now on the coast--a small resort town, but also a bedroom community for Rome. Rents are not so high as in Rome proper, so, off the coast, Ostia looks a bit sad and seedy in places.

One of the angels on the bridge near Castel Sant'Angelo. Some are by Bernini; don't recall if this one is or if it's by one of his students.

Colisseum; didn't go inside. It seems too creepy. You can just see the cross here on the right. No more lions.

Trevi fountain dry while they clean all the coins out. Supposedly, they give the money to the Red Cross. It's such a giant monument but it's in this tiny square. There's room only for it and all the tourists and illegals trying to sell junky stuff to stay alive.
